Author Velda Thomas answers questions about her new book 'This Bone is Mine':
How did you know you needed to write this book? -Swerv
I needed to write this book to explore parts of myself / memories that were surfacing. I needed a way to express and this seemed the best way to give the memories place and for me to stay present with life.
Where in your body does this book live now? -Swerv
I believe this body of work started off as fragments in my head. Now I feel the work in the form of a book has settled in my heart and gut but also is held by something greater outside of me.
What tendrils of your ancestral self will meet the reader? -Randelle
Throughout this book I have woven threads of ancestral dreams, pain and liberation. I’m thinking of a chapters called “Elibet” and one called “Snakes” There you will meet ancestors I commune with often.
Was this book hard to write? -Jeanette
Hell yessss,!!! Writing this book stretched me beyond where I would normally go with words and art. I took some risks including my own personal traumas. Challenged myself to add nuanced layers in words and art.
I feel proud of “This Bone in Mine”. I also had the help of two gifted layout designers.
What was one of the surprises on the journey of creating this work? -Oceans
I’m surprised I wrote a book about trauma that is beautiful. I made compost from the shitty memories of my life. I find that fact to be human, astonishing and now that I am done, quite funny.
